Tenderly I now touch all things, knowing that one day we will part

Meditation starts by journeying inwardly – where we discover natural qualities of heart that can nourish and sustain life in ways that take us beyond our habits.

This brings a beautiful paradox. Discovering kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity as naturally present in our being, there can be a gentle and yet powerful liberation. An inner and an outer opening that is healing in the world.

The Buddha taught taught that the four 'Brahmaviharas' – divine abidings – are boundless qualities and pathways of profound transformation and freedom. They are woven through our capacity for awareness or presence in a way that keeps our journey of freedom heartful and connected, guiding us as we meet our lives.

Noticing these qualities attunes us to our deeper potentials, allowing us to inhabit our being differently. And it allows us to open to our habits and the places of identity that cause us to suffer in a new way – not rejecting but meeting, holding and allow to free up.

In the retreat we we will have time and guidance to really explore our heart's capacity for deepening and opening in this way. Guided by Ajahn Candasiri, and held in the beautiful natural context of Ekuthuleni, the supports and mirrors for us to recognise these jewels in our being will be very much in place.

Focus of this retreat :

The retreat will be held in noble silence.  The days will unfold with a rhythm of sitting, walking meditation and an encouragement to be here in all activities, including helping in small practicals of the retreat and tasting into participation and the support of community. There will be daily meditation guidance, one to one interviews, Q & A opportunities and regular dharma talks...together we can bring the intention to explore and deepen.

The space of practice that is Ekuthuleni is made available with a heart of practice and integrity.  All of what is here has been offered in one way or another - through, energy, time, in meditation or money.  This is the spirit of dana or generosity.

There is a non refundable and non transferable booking fee for each retreat.  This covers basic costs (such as food, insurance, gas and water).  We are a non profit organisation and for all other costs we depend on donations, dana.  It is this way of participation and generosity that really keeps the Dharma rolling, as in dharma centers all over the world!

Ajahn Candasiri was born in Scotland in 1947 and was brought up as a Christian. After university she trained and worked as an occupational therapist, mainly in the field of mental illness. In 1977, an interest in meditation led her to meet Ajahn Sumedho, shortly after his arrival from Thailand. Inspired by his teachings and example, she began her monastic training at Chithurst as one of the first four anagarikaas.

Within the monastic community she has been actively involved in the evolution of the nuns’ Vinaya training. She has guided many meditation retreats for lay people, and particularly enjoys teaching young people and participating in Christian/Buddhist dialogue.
